What’s New In The Way Of High Performance Lighting? With today’s energy driven economy and a considerable participation in the “green movement”, some may question if improvements have been made in industrial lighting. The answer – continuous progress is being made. Since the 1970’s, the industry standard was High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting, which provided sufficient light for tasks, manufacturing, and other necessary applications. With consideration to energy consumption, the available forms of HID lighting have proven to be disadvantageous. The ballasts capability to generate several hundred degrees of heat is one disadvantage with lamps operating over 1,000 degrees. That heat is extremely un- resourceful for manufacturing plants, primarily those that are air-conditioned. Another disadvantage is the expense and labor-intensive replacement of the fixture’s parts. Fortunately, there is a “go green” alternative. High performance fluorescent lighting, which has been on the market since 2001, is making its way to industry standards. Orion Lighting, based out of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, is one of the companies that offer versions of this lighting. Orion offers a patented high performance lighting system that provides a superior quality of light and saves energy with reflector technology by distributing the light efficiently. Other advantages, noted in the company’s brochure are; better color rendering, increased light levels, lower maintenance costs, instant on – no re-strike times, as well as; cooler operating temperatures, improved morale, productivity, and safety. Wayne Wynkoop, Manufacturing Engineering Manager of Freudenberg NOK in Troy, OH, has benefited from these advantages. Jeff Bonham Electric, Inc., of Dayton, OH, replaced 100 465 watt HID fixtures with 100 of Orion’s 221 watt high performance lighting fixtures in the company’s Ohio plant. Lighting costs fell from a projected $20,311 to $9,653 per year as a result. The project had a 47% ROI with a 26 month payback and the lighting in the plant is far superior to before. Dayton Daily News New lights save Troy facility money Staff Report Friday, March 07, 2008 TROY — How does a local company achieve a power savings equal to 251,953 gallons of gasoline? Ask Freudenberg-NOK in Troy. According to Orion Energy Systems of Plymouth, Wisc., Freudenberg-NOK changed its lighting from conventional "high-intensity discharge" (HID) lighting to a "compact modular high-intensity fluorescent system." Jeff Bonham Electric, Inc. replaced 100 465-watt HID fixtures with 100 221-watt compact modular fixtures, Orion said in a recent statement. "Lighting energy costs fell as a result from a projected $20,311 per year to $9,653, and the project had a 47 percent ROI (return on investment)," Orion said. Orion said its energy management systems have "delivered energy savings" for 90 Fortune 500 companies since 2001. Freudenberg-NOK is a joint venture partnership between Freudenberg & Co. in Germany and NOK Corp. in Japan. The companies make elastomeric seals and custom-molded products.
